A collection of more than 100 bonsai trees is hous

A collection of more than 100 bonsai trees is housed in and around this crazy bamboo pavilion at the Quito Botanical Gardens. Most visitors probably spend their time focusing on the trees, but ignoring the pavilion itself would, in my opinion, be a mistake. A bamboo structure like this doesn't come around every day! Beautiful, functional, and sustainable - a winning combination!

There are over 4,000 identified species of orchids in Ecuador, and it has the most endemic orchid species (meaning they occur naturally ONLY in Ecuador) of any country – over 1,700! The orchid greenhouses at the Quito Botanical Gardens host more than 1,200 species!

This little poof is a baby blue-footed booby. "Blue-footed booby?" you ask. "More like off-white-footed booby." The bright blue foot coloring doesn't come until birds reach maturity, and then it's a critical part of how birds choose mates. Based on foot color and brightness, a booby can quickly evaluate the health of a potential mate. Their mating rituals include a lot of stepping and foot flaunting, reflecting just how important this is to choosing the best partner.

Sea lions can be found lounging just about everywhere in the Galapagos, especially on benches and in the middle of pathways. "Sure," they say. "Humans can live here, but whatever they build, we're going to make ourselves right at home in it."
Lying downhill on a wooden walkway doesn't seem like a particularly comfortable position, but this little pup's face would suggest otherwise.
